My story

Hi, I'm Gianluca

Who I am, how I started and why I fly, told without rushing.

01

Why I fly

How often do we wait for our next trip just to look at the world through the aeroplane window, or climb the highest tower just to enjoy the view? I've found a way to do it whenever I like.

I love seeing the world from a new perspective and showing it to others too: at the most important moments of their lives, with the vehicles they care about, or simply to spot a problem on a roof.

02

About me

I'm from Forlì and I've lived in Castel Maggiore since 2020. I've been an electrician since 2019 and I certify solar PV systems.

In my free time I travel with my wife, go hiking in the mountains and take photographs. I play the guitar and the bass: music is my other great passion. I've always loved new technology, wide views and radio-controlled machines, and in the drone I found all of them together.

03

The first flight

My first flight was over San Luca, at around six in the evening. As the drone climbed, the sanctuary, the hills and the city appeared on the screen, and all I could think was: “Am I really seeing this? How wonderful!”

That's when I realised I wanted to show other people the world from up there too. It's still my favourite video today.

04

As a groom

I'd already felt that emotion on my wedding day. When I chose to have a drone I had no doubts, but I never expected the effect that the church, the venue and our arrival seen from above would have in the video. Even today I can't put it into words.

05

Flying well, within the rules

Today everyone knows what a drone is, but flying one well and within the rules is another matter. I hold an A2 pilot certificate, I'm a registered d-flight operator and I keep studying and staying up to date, because even just lifting off the ground involves laws and permits that few people know about.

When someone asks me how high it can go, the answer is always the same: within sight, never above 120 metres and only where d-flight allows it. It's a slightly boring answer, I know, but I'd rather inform people than show off.

06

The places that move me

I don't fly because it's trendy. I fly because the world still amazes me from up there, and I often discover the places I film for the first time myself. I found the old bridge at Bagno di Piano, for example, by searching Maps for a special spot along the Reno.

I'm moved by places with so much history and no one living in them any more, like abandoned villas, castles and villages. And then there are my travels: in the Whitsundays, in Australia, I took my first 360° photo. That untouched blue, that peace… it left me speechless.

07

What I'm like

People tell me I'm determined, that I listen, and that I always find a joke to break the tension.

And I can't keep the thrill of a flight to myself: as soon as the drone lands I show the video to my wife, or to anyone who comes over out of curiosity. At Bondi a young woman stopped to watch, and she had the same look of wonder I have every time. That's why I call it a new perspective.
